I was at the SKUSA ProMoto Tour this last weekend, I heard from a very good source that IKF is going to mandate Billet Flywheels in the clone class. This came up at their annual meeting over the weekend. Since most of the tracks are running IKF insurance, this will affect all of us.
I have not been able to confirm this, but if it's true, we may need to ban together to fight IKF on this change.

Dan, what can we do to make out feelings known to the IKF ? (I'm not even a member so I'm sure my opinion counts for nothing)

I can understand the reasoning..... we don't need stock flywheels coming apart like the old flat heads did.... just a thought...

I hope you guys understand Insurance is not the issue here rather special interest. The underwriter will insure stock clones running stock flywheels no problem just as they have already been doing this season. I’m thinking the best approach will be to voice our opinions to the NCTA and ask that they take it to IKF. With 6 of the 9 tracks (clubs) already running a clone class I’m sure they realize the value of ensuring the stock clone continues to grow while remaining affordable to all. www.norcalikf.com/NCTA contacts: Rick Luther - President (925) 798-4360 rmracing95@aol.com Les Hand - Vice President (916) 383-5278 les@kartelmotorsports.comCindy Duhn - Treasurer/Secretary (775) 267-1191 tctracing02@yahoo.com

The "special interest" Karl refers to has a name. Briggs and Stratton.
The advent of the clone has SIGNIFICANTLY impacted their business. The LO206 has not caught on because of it's pricing model (and interestingly does not have a billet flywheel).
I take umbrage at the "we don't need stock flywheels coming apart like the old flat heads did" comment above. That only happened in modified motors turning 7000 RPM and up, or cheaters that put a 3HP flywheel on their motors. Stock 5hp to my knowledge never had an issue. I am prety sure I saw testing by Tom at ARC that showed the flywheels safe to an RPM well above what the stock valvesprings.

Brad.... the only reason I said that was because I have had and have seen STOCK Flathead flywheels come apart at the Jr2 and Sr. level.... Maybe what i have seen is freak incident... Personally I think the "Special Interest" would be the engine shops, running a stock motor from HF does not give them any room to charge the customer. What better way than to require parts that cost the price of the motor to keep business coming in. Yet another way to have Kart counts of 2 and 3..... again.... I have no problem with a clone class like yours, in fact I have been pushing for it down here rather than a $ 600 206 class. Just whatever happens 1 set of clone rules...

Oh and another thing... It is pretty well known that the IKF and I are not on good terms. They completely screwed my club at the 1997 Speedway Grands (we were the hosting club) and yes I do still hold a $20,000 grudge about it. So I will be unable to participate in any sort of objective conversation about this, I admit that.

Hey I agree... imho IKF is the reason we have 2-3 kart counts so i understand a grudge.

IKF is nothing but insurance and a rule book. NCTA promotes all the IKF races in Region 11, with our new NCTA board, I think that our voice will be heard. The new board has revived IKF in NorCal to the point where SoCal drivers are coming up here to compete. SoCal had to cancel theiir last IKF race due to low entry count.
The new weekend race format with no testing a week before the race allows racers like us to be competitive on a shoestring, we are currently 2nd in points in one of the most competitive classes on a teachers salary.

That's good to know, but I will still be running a little to the left when I'm following another clone closely down the straight, just so my head isn't in the same plane as the flywheel of the kart ahead.
