Changing carbs on race day is only legal up to qualifying. Once you qualify, your carb gets marked with a dot of paint, that must be there when we do tech at the end of the day. Same with tires.
There are always exceptions. If you have a carb meltdown, show it to the tech guy and he will usually allow you to replace it as long as he gets to check both carbs at the end of the day.

OK - chatted with Tom for a while (nice and very helpful guy!!). He said I should still get the bored out 0.615 carb - it is always a better performer. He said that if it in any way is bettered by a stock carb it is the jetting to blame. He did say that his engines are jetted for max power up at 6000rpm - i.e. the 038. He said that is at a cost to the mid to low-high range. He said I should try a 039 main. He also said that say something like a 036 (two below the normal 038 could be as much as 2HP down below 5400rpm. It makes that much difference. Basic advice was not to be timid with trying jets.
Also he said all the engines normally ship with the CL1 retarded cam - this is for dirt and road-racing (by far most common customers). He said he would put the stock one back in there for me as again it comes at a cost to the mid range. So what I am getting is a bored carb 039 jetted standard cam engine. He also said based on when I bought the other two engines (mid last year) they had standard cams in too (which is good - but I don't have any retarded ones to A-B).
I do have some spare jets ranging from 36-40 to try in my engines though. This new engine will ship tomorrow (and get here a week later).
First I have to strip my carbs down for a clean including my mikuni from my Aixro engine (jeez - never again!). I dumped the fuel out of the carb and it was like a runny maple syrup. I thought the Motul 2T synthetic oil had some stabilizing part to it as well - guess not - it was nasty. Learning from Brad I chose to not even attempt a start without a clean first.
So... with my Husky chainsaws and genset that get used very rarely I just shut the gas off and let them run dry - thinking that has sucked every bit of gas out of there. Is that better or worse than just draining the float bowl?
Thanks!!! Mike.
