I just got the harbor freight add as well for the 6.5hp engine for $109 and its got me interested. Was out at Davis a few months ago and met some guys running clones they seemed to be having a blast. They are the ones that pointed me to this web site.
Newbie questions:
will the harbor freight engine work?
What do you have to do to set it up. motor-mount chain clutch exhaust etc?
who has the parts locally Sacramento area. and what cost am I looking at to put this together?
how reliable have the engines and clutches etc proven to be?
Would this be a good package to use with friends who are novices and to put around with my kid?
Thanks for any info you can give...

Hello Ben, I think you talked with my son's ands I out at the Davis Track a couple months ago, We were the ones racing the clones at that time. Now along with the Dixon Kinsmen Club it has grown allot over the summer, We have a great bunch of clone pilots out there racing now. Tonight we are having a race at the Kinsmen race track in Dixon, The races start around 5 pm. and the clones are 5th in line to race. It would be nice to see you down there. We do have allot of great guys you can talk with about getting into the B.S.C. Class. My son Mike # 101 has allot of the answers your looking for. But we also have Karl Kleeton, Jason Hernandez and Simon Whitworth who would be happy to help you with your questions. Plus allot of the others who have helped me in the past. This is a great site for all your questions. My son's & I will be there tonight. Look for us in the pits , Duffy #48, John #24, Mike #101, Just ask around for the clone guys , you will find us. if you can't make it I'll have Mike send you a reply the 1st of the week. Hi Ben, First thing you can do is check out this forum: karting.4cycle.com/forumdisplay.php?f=120About every question you have is on that site. In a nutshell, Harbor Freights will be fine, along with some others. The governor and low oil sensor are removed, gas tank removed, and the air filter and exhaust are removed and replaced with after market ones. Throw in a clutch and motor mount, and you are at around 300 bucks for the whole race ready motor package, maybe less. Find a beat up old chassis, and some used gear, and you can be racing for around 1000 bucks. Cheaper than any other form of motor sports racing! Duffy is right, see if you can get to Dixon this weekend, and you can have a clinic! Good luck

Thanks for all the info guys. Sorry I was unable to make the race hope it went well.
Duffy I guess this means you son got a new kart. I remember at Davis you guys had a young lady drive it and she crashed it pretty good.
After we met at Davis I blew up my shifter motor again and pulled it off. I then fixed up my kt 100 motor and put that on but my wife blew it up when we road raced with NCK down at willow springs a few months ago. (adjusted the needles the wrong way)
So I am looking at having to fix a motor anyway so I thought the clone may be a good way to go. I want a motor thats reliable easy to Martainn, rookie safe and cheap.
This will probably turn in to my fall/winter project thanks again for all the info. One last question what motor mount and clutch would you recommend using?

Well, this coupon ends on 09-21-09... So, as I have to go to the Sac area this week, I think I'll just go ahead and stop by the local Harbor Freight...
Then, I just need to talk Mike into helping me wrench on it...

Then, I just need to talk Mike into helping me wrench on it... I talked with Mike this morning before he took off to school, he gets out of school tonight about 5 pm. Auto shop classes all day today...Anytime after 5 pm would be great to do your new clone engine. Plus I'll be getting the grill going for dinner. see you when you get here.

I am going to buy the harbor Freight Engine. What do you guys think about the warranty? 2 years for about 25$. I told the kids at the store I was going to race with it on a go kart and they didn't care. As long as I don't drop it or anything and the gas tank, governer, aircleaner etc is back on if and when I returned it it would be fine.
What do you guys think?

ben, thats about 25% of the moter cost for an engine that you'll only keep for about 6 or7 races. A one year warranty sounds better? But i'm a f-200 driver and I like to spend my money on my karts, and feeding my Vampire. check with the duff's or Karl

Have you traded in a motor before? Do you put the governor back in or do they even care?

Have you traded in a motor before? Do you put the governor back in or do they even care? I have returned one and I didn't not put the governor/ect back in it , You have to remove the oil and we did put the air cleaner and gas tank back on it. But at the store they never even opened up the box to check anything, It might depend on the store or who waits on you. I had no problem at all, they ( Harbot Freight ) were very helpful with me and I got my new one. ;D
