Well my project is all done. I finally got a chance to take my clone out to Davis today and break it in. Ran great and was a lot of fun but I have a question. How hot are these suckers supposed to run? My head temp gage kept climbing up to 450deg F. It might have gone higher but I decided to pull in at that point. Compared to my Kt100 this seems pretty darn hot especially since it has a fan... What do you guys think?

other info: 38" Jet running 91oct pump gas, 16oz of 10-30 engine oil in the motor.

Temp not a problum untill the oil burns up about 535deg. With your 2cyc you are runing a much higher compretion and flushing large amounts of fuel through keeping things cooler.

Ben, regarding your comment in another thread about the lack of response to your question surprised me too. Come on you cloneheads, spill the beans and help a new guy out! How hot are you typically running? At what point do you get concerned? One thing to keep in mind Ben is that quite a few of the BSCs aren't running any type of gauge and have NO idea how hot/cold they are running OR what RPMs.

Ben, My head temp gauge climb up to 460* the one and only time I had a guage on my clone. It was not my guage and the 1st time I ever had one on my clone. So really I don't know what is right or wrong with the temps. But at 460 it was running ok. My two son's and I all have been running with out. I need a guage , I guess we all do.. Sorry we can't help you. But being my 1st year racing I'm learning all this. We will be at the Davis race this coming weekend. See you there. Carl & Jason would be the guys to ask questions to about the clone temps. All I really know is the At-water race was HOT...LOL

Sorry, I did mean to reply before but needed to look at my MyChron data to be sure. Mine reached 385 at the end of a 15 lap race at Dixon. I know others have seen much higher numbers though.

I haven't seen 400F yet. Your 450F seems high for these engines. If you are running the intake and exhaust upgrades I suspect you might need more fuel.
Save some dough and use 87oct. These engines don't appreciate the 91oct.

Thanks for all the info. I will start using the 87octane gas. And I can try a 39 jet. But from your input and some of other research I have done it seems like my kart set up may have been an issue as well. I had the kart set up for road race and it was pushing pretty bad at Davis. Also I had it geared pretty tall at 16/59 as that was what I had on hand. When I try these changes I will let you guys know. The other thing I found from searching over the other message boards, ( I finally got my password at 4cycle.com to work) was that many folks had posted higher temps for the harbor freight clone than the other clones? Not sure why?
Thanks again for the feedback and hope everyone stayed dry through the storm.
Ben
