Instead of breaking the chain like I do for my 2cycle stuff I was thinking I could run a master-link because the RPM is so much lower.
What do you guys do?

Never a good idea. RPM has not much to do with it, if you tag a curb at idle the master link will still let go, and a broken chain wrapped around the axle will hit your arm or shoulder a millisecond BEFORE it hits the chainguard. Your driving suit or jacket is no match for a flinging chain.

When putting your chains back together do you normally "peen" the end of the pin after you press it back through the side plate? If not then I'd say use the master link. ~Karl

To be honest I have never peened over the pins after breaking a chain. And I have never had one fly off because I didn't peen it over. What I have done is screwed up many a good chain having to break it open to add a link for a gear change etc. This always seems to happen right before a race and I am in a hurry and for what ever reason I cant get enough slack by moving my engine. When I ran my 80 shifter I used a master link and never had any problems with it. However I did lose a chain when I ran master-link on my kt 100. I was running a big rear sprocket and I think it touched the pavement and came off.
More info than you probably wanted. I was just curious how many 4 cycle guys use master link or not.

Hello Ben, I just now stopped useing a master link. but I have never had any problems, My son John is still useing one and has never had a problem. But on the other hand my son Mike had allot of problems at the At-water race. Lots of problems.. So I'd say its up to you and its a 50/50 thing. Wow I was a great help LOL .. see you at Davis this coming weekend.

What? ?? do you really want to install a week link into your drive system, I don't think so?Karl, I'd love to see you peen the pin with the chain on the kart or are you using a master link? Thats how think.

I have been using a master link (mainly because the chain came with one so I assumed that was the norm for these chains). So far no problems, but I can see the arguments against.

Thanks for all the info. I can see everyone is in agreement here. Seriously though I do appreciate the feedback. At this point I think I will fab up a good chain guard and experiment on some practice days just to see what trouble I can cause. If I tear up my kart or get amputated by a flying chain I will let you know. I am curious as to why my post on head temp didn't stir up nearly as much interest. I hope to get a race in this year. Davis this weekend would definaly be fun but so far its not looking to promising with the finances. Defiantly next year. Keep racing, Ben

Not that it is right or wrong but I have NEVER used a master link. Nor have I ever "peened" after breaking and either adding or removing links. What I HAVE done was screwed up a number of chains putting them back together again. I used to absolutely dread reattaching the ends because it seemed like no matter what I did I would bend the crap out of them. It wasn't until I switched chain manufacturers did I realize that the problem wasn't so much the operator as the chain. I used to get the cheap chains from a "local source" that were made in the Czech Republic or some other eastern block country. Anyway, now that I'm using a higher quality chain I haven't messed one up since...those babies just slide together. ;D

I am curious as to why my post on head temp didn't stir up nearly as much interest. 1) Not too many clone drivers have a temp guage 2) No matter how hot or cold your cylinder head is, it will NEVER saw your right arm off, a broken master link will.

I switched to the RLV "Gold on Gold" at the beginning of the year...this is from the Turks Brothers HUGE BLOWOUT SALE email I recieved a couple days ago. RLV-0845 RLV #35 Xtreme "Gold on Gold" Chain 40" $15.80 RLV-0850 RLV #35 Xtreme "Gold on Black" Chain 40" $10.50 I haven't tried the "Gold on Black" chain. Anyone else?

I used the Black &Gold chains for two and a half years racing 4cyc.. It wasn't until after Reno that I changed to the RLV845. I have never had Chain problems in five years of Karting. I use plenty of sticky chain lube witch makes my kart a mess and maby people inback of me too!
