Walt, One of the things too think about is the exposed throtal cable right next to the drivers right foot and ancle where it could be snaged causing unwanted excelleration.
Generaly the rod sistom keeps the cable in a more protected location at the wast of the kart.
I think the reason alot of karts use the cable to pedal sistom is that its simple and cheeper to make. I have two karts with rods and one with the long cable and I snage that cable every time I climb in. Just somthing to think about.
