I just picked up a the same battery that they use in the rotaxs , it says its a Power Patrol SLA 1088.
Sealed AGM style battery, 12V 9AH
No idea on the wire gauge I'm afraid Rich.

I generally don't do wisdom and I don't intent to start now! ;D I don't have a specific battery model number for you although I can look to see if there is one on my battery when I get home tonight. I've bought two now and I just asked for a TAG battery and they have worked fine. I'm also unclear as to the gauge of wire used. Terry Nash made the wiring harness thingy for me. For some reason 16-18 sticks in my brain but I'm not sure why.
So did you pick up a chassis Rich?

I wouldn't go smaller than 10-12 ga wire.
The battery is the same size as that used in my trailer for the breakaway system so a trailer supply store is one option.
Power sports shops (atv, motorcycles, etc.) are another option.

I got the TAG one too, because they make a kart specific bracket to hold down the battery. If you think about the violence of e flip, you don't want a 5 pound battery flinging out of the kart in a crash.

Yes, if you don't have anything I suggest buying through a kart shop. That way you will get an appropriate mount.
