Hey guys, I finally found a kart at great price for my college student budget. Its a 2002 Emmick Viper with a new motor thats only been broken in and practiced on. Now that I have the kart I need to get everything else to go with it. So I figured I would check with you guys as I make my shopping list clear up some questions.
1. Used YCK tires- the kart came with used ykc's mounted. My concern is that they look VERY used without much life left. How exactly do you tell how much life is left on the tire? I'm guessing the dimples on the tire are there to measure the depth of the tread left so at what depth do cloners consider tires trashed? And if I need some newer ones does anybody have some they would like to sell?
2. RLV Mini 91 muffler- it came with the old style muffler so I know I need the new one but do I also need a new header or is the threading on the RLV the same as threading on the stock muffler?
3. Sprockets- kart came with a 64T and no others. What range should I make sure to have available for running at different tracks? I believe my clucth is 16T but couldn't see a stamping on it so I will pull the seat later and count to verify.
4. Engine oil- what do you guys recommend using and how many ounces do you put in the engine?
5. Air tank- do most people use a portable tank that they fill at home before going to the track or is a small battery powered compressor better?
6. Valve cover breather-Is the valve cover supposed to have a breather filter? The previous owner had a breather tube that left the valve cover and then went into a small plastic water bottle that is zip-tied to the carb. The bottle has a paper towel stuffed in it and holes drilled in the sides so it acts like a breather filter but looks really tacky. Are there better alternatives than this?
I think for other things like tools and lubes and sprays I am well covered for and will just pick things up along the way. Can't wait to get out on the track and start racing!

Hi, and welcome! I can answer #2 and #5 for you.
Yes, the new muffler has the same threads as the old style.
Many people bring compressed air tanks. But, at least one track (BlueMax) has an air compressor that can be used when you are there. Personally, I use a good quality (hand powered) bicycle air pump. It doesn't take up much room and is pretty easy to use.

Yes YKC is the tire were running till mid season then were suppose to go over to the YLC but theres some questions as to weather the clones will have to run them untill a surplus of used YLC's become plentiful. most cloners just run them till they cant get anymore out them. when the dimple is gone its time for a new set of used tires, Yes the Mini just screws into your existing header, make sure you brace it as they break off at the threads if you dont, its just a piece of flat stock that bolts to the unused lug on the side of the head by the exaust manifold, you'll see it, and clamps to the muffler, not that I think it will work but thats what RLV says to do to fix there defect. 16/64 might be OK for Davis but you wouldent want it at Dixon, might want to work on getting a few more gears, at least a 60 and 62, 16 oz of any good 20 weight seems to be the norm, most tracks have a compressor, but a portable tank is a lot easier than wheeling your kart over to them every time you want to add air.
hope to see you soon almost forgot that catch can is a courtesy, in case you hole a piston, but not required as of yet

For your first race or three, you just need to pick a buddy (any of us will do) and we can help with air, tools, etc.
Sprays become a matter of personal opinion as to what works best for you. The only sprays I bring are chain lube (actually garage door opener lube) and a teflon spray for the bearings (I use Tri-Flow), brake cleaner and carb cleaner.

Thanks for the advice guys. Hopefully I might be able to get all my stuff together in time for the Davis race but that may be pushing it. For sprockets I think I may order 60-63's so I'll have a range of 60 to 64. Anyone else have any idea if that is that a big enough range for a 16T clutch at PC, Dixon, and Davis?
Also, what is the average weight of a clone kart with no lead bolted on? I'm about 180 so I think I might need to add some weight to the kart maybe?
Tom, what type of tubing are you making the wider rear bumpers out of? What are you charging for them?

My math may be questionable but sufficient to get you in the ball park. In KT I ran 10 tooth:80 gear at Dixon and 10:86 at Davis. In F200 I ran 14:68 which equates to 14:63ish at Dixon. if someone has the starting gear at Davis or Dixon for a clone we can figure it out. But in F200 it appears to be about a 5 gear difference, and then you play around from that. PC is not that far off from Davis, but it depends on the track layout. I just had to re-buy all gears because I mis-placed mine. I bought 62-68, with a 14 driver. Maybe it is overkill. Maybe I will get energy to change the gear on a raceday. Maybe I will just loan them to someone. Maybe I will pay someone to change my gear. Maybe ................

Alright Kevin!! yee haw!! get your butt to the track and we'll work on your gearing, as every engine is a bit different, some will pull a 3.75 all day long at 5600, where others will spin 6000 and wont pull a 4.00, so I dont put a lot of faith in, What gears you running? it comes down to what works for you, as far as the bumpers go there a 3/4 .065 IKF/WKA legal, nothing special, $50 bucks, give me a center to center at the mount and I'll make sure I have one for you . but for now just show up with what you have, your in good hands bro.

Hey Tom, will you be at Davis this weekend? I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that all my driving gear will show up this week and fit ok so that I might be able to make it out to the Davis race Sunday. The center to center bumper mount for my Emmick looked to be exactly 24". If you wont be at Davis I can probably build a bumper this week, just need to buy tubing. How wide are you making them and are you making yours out of 4130 chromoly or out of stainless? I've TIGed some chromoly before (wasn't very pretty but got the job done) and I've heard stainless is even tricky to weld but I have a buddy that can weld both if I need help.

Don't do stainless, too brittle.
MOst of us are making the bumpers around 42 inches wide. That lets you narrow the rear to 42, or go as wide as 48 with 6"tires.

Mine is 46" and I think Paul's is 48" mild steel 3/4 OD,.065 wall.

Hey kevin there all .75x.065 mild steel, stainless or alloy is bad news if you back it into a barrier at speed, rather see that bumper bend than your frame if you know what I mean. I have a 24"x 48" if you want it, seems to be a popular size for the sprint karts, let me know if you plan to do some road racing and need something a bit narrower, I need to build a few more this week so I'm doing orders, I'm kinda in the air this week and have no idea where I'll land this weekend but I'll get bumpers to Davis for the race one way or the other,

Thanks for the info guys! Glad to know it's just mild steel. My work schedule just changed and I now have to be at the All American Speedway in Roseville on Sunday with a racing team I am doing an internship with so I can no longer make it to Davis to race . So in that case I think I will just make my own bumper since I will have plenty of time before needing it for the next race. Maybe I will try and practice next weekend at PC to get my kart somewhat tuned and setup before my first race
