After witnessing 2 major sidecover gasket failures this weekend, I remembered my notes to myself to buy one of these... www.fastermotors.net/Blocksupports.html and scroll all the way down for the "chain guard Plus"

I took mine apart tonight and it's interesting to see that earlier this year I had torqued all 6 crank cover bolts exactly the same numbers as per the factory spec. In the picture you can see the bottom left corner where the bolt had worked loose (but was still there) it sucked the gasket in, but the bottom right (where the bolt is somewhere in the grass around Davis) the gasket stayed in place. All the other bolts were firmly in place when I took it apart. Considering they were all torqued exactly the same, I agree that something funky happens on that bottom edge of the crank case (but Scott's failed on the top!) A couple of things I will be doing differently this time: - Loctite them, last time they were dry. - Check them regularly Interesting that my $100 clone motors never leaked a drop and I was forever tinkering inside those, but I have been chasing oil leaks with my $1000 B&S motor since day one ...... but it does go faster if I can keep the side cover on ! Luis, if you are reading this, who sells that breather kit you have ? I think that's a good mod, these motors certainly look like they have suction issues in the crankcase, but bolts dropping out doesn't help much !

Thanks Luis! I'm having flashbacks to when I was a teenager riding a BSA.

hey guy's....why don't you drill your bolts and safety wire ur side plates! It's fool proof and you won't ever oil down the track again. I wire all my clone's since Rich burnt his motor up last summer! If you need drilled bolts, let me know and i'll have inventory in my rig.

Guess what. When I got home and unloaded my kart from the trailer on Sunday evening, there was a puddle of oil on the trailer floor ! I checked all the side cover bolts and they were all still tight.
Last night I popped off the side cover and the friggin gasket had been sucked in again !
I'll get one of those breather gizmos, check the cover for warping, do a new gasket with RTV again and see how we go.

WTH? Have considered giving Terry a call to see if he has any tips for addressing this issue? I've been running WFs for over 2 years now and haven't run into this problem yet. Maybe it is just luck, but my experience is that if something like this can happen it WILL happen to me. LOL

Simon, can you share the price & availability of that breather kit? Tell Terry that there will probably be a few more of us calling.
By the way, that block support from Comet does not work with a stater installed. I purchased one a while back.

Last night I popped off the side cover and the friggin gasket had been sucked in again !. The 2010 World Formula Modified Tour Rules reference something that sounds like what you are experiencing. “CRANKCASE SIDE-COVER: Side-Cover must remain stock EXCEPT block and side-cover may be pin-punched to help prevent side-cover gasket failure and stub for governor may be removed and hole plugged to prevent leakage. Crankcase breather allowed.” (emphasis added) I don't know if this is helpful or not, but thought it may be relevant.

That is interesting Ron. Someone at Davis was telling me about the pin-punch trick the first time I dumped oil all over the ground. I have not plucked up the courage to try that yet.
Rich, Comet have those breather kits for about $36, I ordered one there online ... as much as I hate to buy kart parts online.

Got to spend an afternoon with Terry Ives this weekend. Pumped him for all kinds of advice. Told him about the side cover gasket failures. His opinion is that if you have a Gen. 4 or newer WF they have fixed the warping problem with added material in the block. He said they have not had a problem with side covers as soon as they locktited the bolts and tq to factory spec( NOT tighter than that). Over tightening is just as bad, as it squeezes the gasket out.
Simon, he did say to have your block and/or side cover deck checked if you have a continuous problem
Asked him about the side cover support and breather kit. With a scowl on his face he said" sounds like somebody is trying to sell some parts" Not a ringing endorsement of either product.

Simon, he did say to have your block and/or side cover deck checked if you have a continuous problem Thanks Rich. Seeing as though the motor is apart and we have a few weeks off I might take it round to Don Durbin Sr. and let him check the case and cover for flatness. I may well have done harm when the bolts backed out completely at Davis.

I am going to put on the breather kit no matter. Can anyone think any negatives to this kit?
