They are not that stiff. They can be pushed in part way by hand. But then you have to fuss with connectors, etc. For example I can put a keeper for the valve to the head so it does not move. I can then use each thumb to compress the spring. I then have no hands to complete the work. I am confident my wife will not put her hands in there.
My experience in dealing with springs is to get something to help make the job easier. If you don't have a tool to help you risk damaging the valve, connector, spring, or my fingers.

Why is it every time I see that you posted something in response to my post I know it is going to be a smart__ remark. I always laugh though so keep it up.
Right now I have not even touched the kart. My boxes that I unloaded from my truck were pushed in on my kart stand, and lying all over the kart. It is still sitting in the middle of the garage. THus I am not working on my kart. I am trying to get the springs off the old head, and THEN I will work on my kart. I am still burning time just thinking about it. I'll get it done on October 21.

Right now I have not even touched the kart. Phew! You had me scared there for a minute. Almost googled "kart aversion therapy" just in case you were seriously thinking about doing something silly...

It was a close call. Last night I thought about putting the boxes away and working on my kart. I walked outside (11:00pm) and went into the garage. I decided not to put the boxes away and also decided not to work on the kart. Instead I was going to take the old head apart. I saw the box on the shelf that contains the old head sitting just next to the refrigerator. I decided to have a beer instead. It ws soooooooo close, but you would have been proud of me.

Brad: I failed. Last night I put the boxes away and took the valve cover off to inspect the head on the kart. I then took the valves and springs out of the cracked head. Payback to me for doing this before the 11th hour of the last day, I lost one of the keepers for the spring. I should have just left everything and wait for the Redding race to be the next day to throw everything together.

Hello, I have a valve spring tool that will work and I think I have some extra keepers. You can borrow the tool and have the clip only catch is you have to show me how to change them since my valve springs need replacing also. I was going to wait until Shasta race also but i would rather do it before then. I will be around Davis this weekend, let me know.

email me and we will coordinate. skydivingrlc at yahoo.com
I did get a tool, but it does not work on the F200. It will work on the B&S, I think.
Also the keeper I lost is off the old cracked head, which is different from the keeper on the new head. The old head had the half c wedges, and the new heads I think have the regular clip type keeper. So if that is the case I just need to remove the springs, replace them, and use the new head keepers again.
If the new head had the wedges I would have changed them already. But with the new style the tool is needed.
Hey Brad, if I do his springs, and he does mine, does that count a working on my kart? ;D

Danger Will Robinson...
If you mix and match verify the retainer and valve stem are compatible. If OK verify the installed height of the spring didn't change (or at least didn't get taller).

I am being very careful. Everything is getting measured multiple times. The intent is to use everything the same on the new head, and just swap out the spring if it is identical in size. If I am not sure, it goes back to what was working before. The ramifications for a mistake could be explosive. Or it could just not run. Signed, Will Robinson PS: It is just so difficult to work on the kart with BradW watching over me. I know if I work on it he will send me in for therapy or something.

I took the kart to Davis Saturday morning and had a hard time starting it, running real rough. So I took it home and took the side cover off and 1/2 the crank shaft came with it! It must have broke at PC because I have not started it since then. The crank had play, up/down not in/out before I started it Saturday. Amazing that it started at all! Cam and top of piston and valves look OK. Bolts on rod dug out a spot on the housing, not all the way through but a few rpm's from it. Not sure it is worth fixing this F-!!! or buying a WF? I do not know how to post pictures on this website?

Ah man, that really sucks. Depending on what all was damaged it could either be relatively (I should have done that in caps) cheap, or, not.
I'm checking with Luis to see if those WFs are still available.
